Implicit Association Testing (IAT).
What Is Implicit Association Testing (IAT)?
Implicit Association Testing (IAT) is a neuroscience-based research method that measures the subconscious, automatic response to a sonic asset rather than what people say they prefer. By timing how quickly listeners pair a sound with concepts such as trust, quality or a specific brand, it reveals the emotional cues that actually drive memorability, attribution and long-term brand value, before conscious opinion gets in the way.
Implicit Association Testing (IAT) in Practice
In sonic branding, IAT is run on candidate sonic logos and brand tracks both blind to the brand and in direct association with it, so a team can see whether the sound performs on its own and whether it strengthens or dilutes the brand once anchored to it. Results are compared across markets and audiences, giving leadership an evidence-based way to choose between creative directions, validate a chosen identity, and reduce launch risk, without constraining the composers. At WithFeeling it sits alongside creative review as an optional validation stage for global identities.
