What Is Musicology in Sonic Branding?

Musicology in sonic branding is the expert structural analysis of a composition, its melody, harmony, rhythm and arrangement, against existing commercial and cultural references, to establish that it is original, clearly differentiated and free of copyright or reputational risk. It is the same discipline used as expert evidence in music copyright cases, applied before a brand sound goes to market rather than after a dispute.

Musicology in Practice

A musicology review typically examines the core melodic motif of a sonic logo or brand track, tests it against the wider catalogue of released music and against the cultural repertoire it draws on, and documents where and how it is distinct. For brands, the review confirms three things: that the composition is structurally original, that it is clearly differentiated from anything already in the market or the culture it references, and that the risk has been independently assessed. WithFeeling puts every core composition through musicology review before delivery, so a sonic identity is emotionally distinctive, culturally appropriate and legally robust, and can carry the brand for years without a question mark over it.
