What Is Adaptive Audio?
Adaptive audio is sound that changes in real time in response to user actions, system states or environmental conditions, rather than playing back as a fixed recording. Common in video games, apps and interactive installations, it adjusts elements such as intensity, layers or tempo so the music and sound always match what is happening on screen.
Adaptive Audio in Practice
The idea was born in game scoring. LucasArts’ iMUSE system, created by composers Michael Land and Peter McConnell and first used in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge in 1991, let the score transition seamlessly as players moved between scenes, decades before streaming apps made dynamic content ordinary. Today adaptive audio underpins fitness apps that shift music with workout intensity, in-car systems that respond to driving modes, and brand experiences where sound reacts to touch, gesture or data. For sonic branding, the implication is significant: a brand’s sonic DNA must be designed as a flexible system of parts, not a single fixed recording, so it can respond gracefully wherever listeners meet it.
