GOOGLE CONTRAILS: ORIGINAL MUSIC FOR THE FUTURE OF FLIGHT
The Future of Flight is a Google AI documentary about contrails, the line-shaped clouds behind aircraft that drive roughly 35% of aviation’s global warming impact. Google Research uses AI, satellite imagery and weather data to predict where contrails will form, so pilots can route around them. WithFeeling composed the original music for the film, in partnership with Overcoast.
THE CHALLENGE
Score a research-led film about contrail avoidance and turn dense climate science into something a general audience can feel. The music had to support visuals of weather systems, satellite imagery and aviation data without overpowering the narration, while making a complex idea feel hopeful and human.
THE APPROACH
WithFeeling built the original score around themes of flight, clarity and the upper atmosphere. Airy textures, slow strings and gentle pulses tracked the storytelling, rising through the AI sequences and easing into the human moments. Scored in close partnership with Overcoast to land exactly to picture and pacing.
THE RESULT
An original soundtrack that lets the research breathe. The music gives The Future of Flight its sonic identity, and helps Google make the case that contrail avoidance could be one of the most cost-effective climate solutions in aviation, at an estimated $5 to $25 per ton of CO₂.
