Sonic Palette
What Is a Sonic Palette?
A sonic palette is the defined set of instruments, tones, textures and production styles a brand draws on whenever it creates sound, working exactly like a visual brand’s colour palette. It ensures every asset, from sonic logo to hold music, is built from the same recognisable sound world.
Sonic Palette in Practice
Mastercard’s 2019 sonic brand is the classic demonstration. From a single core melody, the company built a family of assets: a sonic logo, an acceptance sound at checkout, and regional adaptations across genres, all recognisably one voice because they share instrumentation, harmony and mood. That shared toolkit is the sonic palette. In practice an agency defines it early: which instruments are on-brand, which are banned, how bright or warm the mixes should feel, what rhythmic character recurs. Documented in the sonic brand guidelines, the palette lets different composers produce work years apart that still sounds like the same brand, which is the entire point of sonic branding.
