What Is a Topline?

A topline is the melody and lyric written over an existing instrumental track, the part a listener would sing. In modern music production, topline writing is a distinct craft from track production, and in sonic branding it is the discipline behind any sung brand piece, from anthem to slogan.

Topline in Practice

Pop’s dominant method is topline-led, and its most famous practitioner is Max Martin, the Swedish writer and producer behind hits from Britney Spears’ Baby One More Time to The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights. Martin’s approach, often called melodic math, treats the topline as the product: melody comes first and every syllable must serve it, which is why his hooks survive translation, covers and karaoke. Sung brand music follows the same logic. The track sets the mood, but the topline carries the message and decides whether anyone can sing it back, so it is briefed as its own craft, sometimes by specialist writers. Any sung brand commission, from a sung slogan to a full anthem such as WithFeeling’s official song for Expo 2020 Dubai, ultimately stands or falls on its topline.

Famous Example

A memorable jingle is one tool within a brand’s wider sonic branding.
